  • The Shed provides experiential, skills-based learning designed to foster global competencies across three key areas: Me (the needs of self), We (the needs of others), and Us (the needs of the world and nature).

Rather than solely focusing on outdoor activities, we use diverse tools like outdoor exploration, cooking, building, and permaculture to create reflective experiences in a safe, caring environment with supportive mentors.

  • Purposeful play and exploring in natural outdoor environments provides immense benefits for children's development and well-being. Some of the key advantages include:

Physical Health: Being active outdoors supports children's gross motor skills, coordination, and overall physical fitness. The varied terrain and open space encourages running, jumping, climbing, and other vigorous, purposeful play that is essential for healthy child development.

Mental Health and Wellbeing: Studies show that children who spend more time playing and exploring outdoors tend to have better mental health outcomes, including lower rates of anxiety and depression. Exposure to nature has been linked to increased happiness, reduced stress, and improved self-regulation in children. This is especially important in the digital age, where children may often spend excessive time on screens.

Cognitive Development: Time spent in nature helps expand children’s understanding of the world. It stimulates children's senses and curiosity, sparking new discoveries that challenge their problem-solving abilities. Unstructured outdoor play and purposeful learning through play also nurture creativity and imagination.

Social-Emotional Skills: Cooperative games, imaginative play, and sharing outdoor experiences with peers cultivate important social skills like oracy, communication, problem resolution, collaboration, and empathy. Nature settings can also have a calming effect, helping children regulate their emotions.

Connection to the Environment: Engaging directly with the natural world fosters a sense of wonder, appreciation, and stewardship for the environment. Children who play outside develop a deeper connection to nature that can inspire a lifelong commitment to sustainability.

  • Even on "indoor" days, we'll take every opportunity to go outside. Indoor activities may include market trips, community walks, cooking, building, project-based tasks, and permaculture work.

Our indoor sessions take place at the venue of our sister charity organization, More Good in Chai Wan.

  • The number will vary based on the session, but we cap our class sizes to 12 or 18 children for our Holiday Programs depending on the age group.

  • We strive to maintain a ratio of 4 children to 1 mentor.

  • Our staff/mentors are adults from diverse backgrounds. We provide staff training for all team members on child protection/safeguarding and risk management.

Most of our staff have a teaching background or have years of experience working with children.

  • All sessions are taught in English.

  • At The Shed, we encourage independent learning and raising children to have critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so we ask that caregivers and parents only join us for family events and during pickup and drop-off time.

  • Lunch is only provided on overnight camps and certain cooking programs which will be communicated per each program.

  • Our programs are designed with each respective age groups in mind. However, our mentors will be able to differentiate for ability and skill level to ensure the child is sufficiently challenged in their appropriate age group program.

For serious emergencies, we have protocols to quickly contact emergency services and transport the child as needed.

We will immediately notify parents/guardians of any significant illness or injury to their child.

  • Children will be always be wearing a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) while doing any water related activities.

All of our mentors are First-Aid trained and carry appropriate rescue equipment.

  • The health and safety of all our participants is of utmost importance. If your child requires any medication, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, during their time at The Shed, we are happy to assist with administration.

In the event that your child requires medication for pain relief, fever reduction, or antihistamine medication during the program, we can provide an appropriate over-the-counter dose. However, we will first contact you or your designated emergency contact before administering any medication. Our staff are trained in first aid and can safely provide basic medical care as needed.

  • For any medication your child needs to take during the program, whether prescription or over-the-counter, please send only the amount required for the duration of the program. All medication must be clearly labeled with your child's name, the medication name, dosage, and frequency.

Our staff will ensure the medication is properly stored and keep detailed records of any administration. This allows us to safely and effectively manage your child's medical needs throughout the program. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns about sending medication with your child.

Bad Weather Arrangements

  • We usually go ahead with the outdoor plan even if it is raining. Our trail is well covered with frequent shelter spots for breaks and it’s a great opportunity to experience nature in a different state.

  • For safety reasons, all sessions will be cancelled if the Black Rainstorm or Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher, has been hoisted prior to the session. In this case, no refund, course credit, nor make-up session will be issued. If it appears that the Hong Kong Observatory is preparing to hoist the Black rainstorm or Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher, during a session then all parents are encouraged to pick up their child as soon as possible prior to the signal being raised.  The Shed staff will remain with all children until they have been returned to the care of their caregiver.

Sessions will be rearranged as an indoor session if Red Rainstorm or Typhoon Signal No. 3 has been hoisted prior to the course, in this case, no refund will be issued.
